Can God make a rock so heavy he cannot lift it?

God & the TrinityIn theological review

The short answer

No, and that is not a limit on God's power. A rock an all-powerful God cannot lift is a self-contradiction, not a real task, and Scripture defines God's omnipotence as power to do all that is consistent with who he is, which is why the same Bible says God cannot lie.

The fuller answer

No, God cannot make a rock so heavy that he cannot lift it, and the reason is not a limit on his power. The question is built like a trap: if he can make it, he cannot do everything, and if he cannot make it, he cannot do everything. But the trap depends on treating a contradiction as if it were a task. A rock too heavy for an all-powerful God to lift is not a real thing waiting to be made. It is words arranged so that they cancel themselves out. It has been asked in classrooms and debating halls for generations, usually as a conversation stopper rather than as a genuine search for an answer about God.

Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.

Psalm 115:3 (BSB)

Scripture's picture of God's power is wide and unembarrassed. God does all that he pleases in heaven and on earth. Jeremiah, watching a potter work clay, hears God ask whether anything is too difficult for him, and the implied answer is no. Nothing in the Bible hints that God struggles against weights, distances, or sizes. Creation itself, made from nothing by his word, is the standing evidence that no physical task lies beyond him.

“Oh, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!

Jeremiah 32:17 (BSB)

At the same time, the Bible says plainly that there are things God cannot do, and it treats them as perfections, not weaknesses. Titus says God cannot lie. He cannot deny himself, cannot be tempted by evil, and cannot act against his own holy nature. Omnipotence, as Scripture uses it, means God can do all that is consistent with who he is. A self-contradictory rock asks him to stop being God, which is exactly what he cannot and will not do.

in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.

Titus 1:2 (BSB)

So the honest answer refuses the trap rather than falling into either side of it. God can make a rock of any size that can exist, and he can lift, move, or unmake any rock that exists. What he cannot do is make nonsense true, because truth is not something outside him that he must obey. His power and his nature are one, and a question that pits them against each other fails on its own logic before it ever reaches God. God's power is therefore greater, not smaller, than the puzzle allows, because it is the steady power of a perfectly consistent being who never contradicts himself.
