Does God care about my small prayers?

PrayerIn theological review

The short answer

Yes, God cares about your small prayers, because Jesus taught that your Father knows what you need before you ask and counts even the sparrows and the hairs of your head. Nothing is too small to bring to a Father like that. Paul tells believers to bring everything, with thanksgiving, and that everything includes the errands, the lost keys and the awkward conversation at work.

The fuller answer

Yes, and the reason is not that small things are secretly big. The reason is who you are praying to. Jesus says your Father knows what you need before you ask him, which could sound like a reason to stop asking until you notice what kind of knowledge it is. A stranger does not know your needs before you speak. A father does, because he has been paying attention all along. Small prayers are not information for God. They are a child speaking to a Father who is already near.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Matthew 6:8 (BSB)

Jesus pushed the point down to the smallest scale he could find. Two sparrows, he said, are sold for a penny, and not one of them falls to the ground outside the Father's care, and the very hairs of your head are numbered. If God keeps count of sparrows and hair, the maths appointment, the broken washing machine and the friendship you are worried about are not beneath his notice. You are worth more than many sparrows, and Jesus said so precisely so that small fears could be prayed about without embarrassment.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:29-31 (BSB)

Paul's instruction matches. Be anxious for nothing, he writes, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. He does not sort requests into sizes before issuing the invitation, and the everything in that sentence has carried Christians through job interviews and hospital corridors and ordinary Tuesdays. Bringing small things to God all day long is not a lesser spirituality. For most believers it is where a prayer life actually lives, far more than in occasional grand occasions.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:6 (BSB)

So pray about the parking space and the presentation, the child's cough and the text you do not know how to answer. Pray honestly about wanting things you are not sure you should want, and let God sort the wanting. One caution only: small prayers are a door into trust, not a slot machine for errands, and sometimes the answer is a quiet no that still leaves you kept. A Father who numbers hairs can be trusted with both his yes and his no. He is a Father, not a complaints department with a minimum claim size.
