How should a beginner start reading the Bible?

Scripture & How We Got ItIn theological review

The short answer

Start with the Gospel of Luke, then read Acts for the story of the first church, then Genesis for the beginning of everything, then the Psalms for prayer, reading a chapter or two a day and asking what each passage says about God and about Jesus. That path gives a new reader the centre of the faith first, in plain order, without getting lost.

The fuller answer

Do not start at Genesis and push straight through as your first plan, however logical it sounds. Most beginners stall in Leviticus, not from laziness but because they lack the story's centre. Begin instead with Luke, the Gospel written for an outsider investigating the faith, orderly and full of Jesus' parables and mercy to unlikely people. Mark is the shorter, faster alternative, opening at once with the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Mark 1:1 (BSB)

From Luke, continue into Acts, his second volume, and watch the risen Jesus build his church through ordinary, flawed people. Then go back to Genesis with the whole story in view, and you will recognise its promises, patterns, and people as the foundation Jesus and Paul keep quoting. Add Psalms alongside everything as a daily prayer book, one psalm at a time, since the Psalms teach God's people how to speak to him in every season. A notebook helps more than an app at this stage, since writing one sentence about each chapter forces attention and gives you a record of growth to reread months later.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1 (BSB)

Keep the method simple enough to survive busy weeks. Read a manageable portion daily, note one thing the passage teaches about God, and pray it back in your own words. John's Gospel states the goal of all Bible reading: that you may believe Jesus is the Christ and have life in his name. The big story lesson linked below can supply the map while this path supplies the miles.

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

John 20:31 (BSB)

Expect the first month to feel uneven, and do not let a missed day become a surrendered plan. Read where you left off, not where the calendar says you should be, and bring your questions to church, to a trusted friend, or to the notes in a good study Bible rather than carrying them alone. Every experienced Christian you admire began exactly where you are, with an unfamiliar book and a decision to open it tomorrow as well. The path Luke, Acts, Genesis, Psalms is not magic. It is simply a good road, and roads are for walking.
