What does the Bible say about suicide?
The short answer
The Bible never treats a suffering person's life as worthless, and it gives no one permission to pronounce on any individual's eternity: that judgment belongs to God alone. Its texts of hope are strong ones: nothing can separate those who belong to Christ from his love, and no one can snatch them from his hand. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please act today: in the US, call or text 988, and tell a trusted person, pastor or counsellor today.
The fuller answer
However you arrived at this page, stay a while. There is no hurry here, and nothing you read below will be used to frighten you. The Bible speaks about life as a gift from God, about despair honestly and without flinching, and about people at the very end of themselves who were met by God rather than discarded by him. Elijah, exhausted and afraid, asked God to take his life. God answered with food, sleep and a gentle voice, and gave him company for the road.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
Psalm 46:1 (BSB)
Two promises stand at the centre of what Christians say here, and they are stated as strongly as language allows. Paul wrote that neither death nor life, nor anything else in all creation, can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Jesus said his sheep hear his voice, that he gives them eternal life, and that no one can snatch them from his hand. This page will not speculate about any individual person's eternity. That judgment is God's, and his character is not in doubt.
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:39 (BSB)
It is worth being precise. Scripture records a small number of suicides, mostly of people already deep in betrayal or ruin, and it reports them soberly, without turning any of them into either a warning label or a verdict on every sufferer since. The commandment against murder has rightly taught Christians to treat every life, including their own, as sacred and not theirs to end. But the church at its best has paired that conviction with compassion, because despair is an affliction to be carried with people, not a label to pin on them.
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.
John 10:28 (BSB)
If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, that is the part to act on now, before any theology. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. If you may act on these thoughts, call emergency services or go to an emergency room. And today, tell a real person who knows you: a trusted friend or family member, a pastor, or a counsellor. Telling is not weakness. In Scripture, God repeatedly sends help through ordinary people, and he can use them for you.
