What is sin?
The short answer
Sin is anything in us or done by us that falls short of God's holy character and breaks his good law. The Bible treats it as more than mistakes: it is rebellion against a good God, missing the life we were made for, and it separates us from him until he puts it right.
The fuller answer
Sin is the Bible's word for human wrongdoing measured against God himself, not against other people. We may look respectable beside a neighbour, yet still fall short of the glory and goodness of God. Sin includes actions we know are wrong, attitudes we hide, and good we leave undone. It can be a deed, a word, a desire, or a settled direction away from God. That is why the Bible speaks of sin as both acts we commit and a condition we live in.
Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.
1 John 3:4 (BSB)
One clear definition calls sin lawlessness: a crossing of the line God has drawn because he knows what harms us and dishonours him. The third chapter of Genesis shows the pattern at the start. God's word is questioned, his goodness is doubted, his command is crossed, and shame, hiding and blame follow at once. Sin is therefore never only private. It damages trust with God, fractures relationships with people, and leaves the sinner needing forgiveness and a changed heart, not merely better habits.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 3:23 (BSB)
Paul's summary is deliberately level. All have sinned. No nation, family, age or respectable background stands outside the sentence. That sounds severe until its purpose is seen: the same chapter that levels everyone also announces a righteousness from God, given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. An honest naming of sin is not the end of the Christian message. It is the doorway into it, because a person who thinks he is only slightly unwell will never value the cure God actually offers.
Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.
James 4:17 (BSB)
James widens the definition in a searching way. Knowing the good we ought to do, and failing to do it, is also sin. That reaches the help withheld, the apology never made, the need noticed and passed by. The Christian answer is not to lower God's standard until we pass it, nor to despair under it. It is confession, repentance and faith in Christ, whose death deals with guilt, and whose Spirit begins the slow work of making people new from the inside.
