Why are there four Gospels instead of one combined life of Jesus?

Scripture & How We Got ItIn theological review

The short answer

God gave four Gospels because four apostolic witnesses, writing for different readers, together give a fuller and more reliable portrait of Jesus than any single merged account could. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John each select, arrange, and emphasise according to their purpose, and the early church, in Irenaeus' famous defence, received all four and no fewer.

The fuller answer

A combined life sounds tidy, and people have tried it since the second century, when Tatian wove the four into one harmony. The church kept the four separate instead, and wisely. Witnesses in any serious inquiry are heard individually, because agreement in substance with difference in detail and angle is the mark of real testimony. Merging the Gospels would flatten four inspired accounts into one human summary and hide how each evangelist teaches.

Many have undertaken to compose an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

Luke 1:1 (BSB)

Each Gospel has its own assignment. Matthew presents Jesus as Israel's promised King, Mark as the suffering servant who acts at once, Luke as the Saviour who seeks the lost of every nation, and John as the eternal Word made flesh. Irenaeus, writing against heretics around 180 in the third book of Against Heresies, argued the church could no more have three or five Gospels than the world could have a different number of winds, pressing the point that fourfold witness was God's design. The early church also knew and rejected attempts to reduce the four to one approved life, or to add rival gospels, guarding the apostolic witness in its received fourfold form.

This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Mark 1:1 (BSB)

The fourfold pattern also serves the reader's faith. John states his purpose openly: these things are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Christ and have life in his name. Reading the same events through four Spirit guided witnesses deepens rather than confuses belief. Where accounts differ in detail, patient comparison usually resolves the tension, and the combined portrait is richer than any harmony built by cutting and pasting.

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

John 20:31 (BSB)

A good way to feel the gift is to read one event, such as the feeding of the five thousand, in all four Gospels in a single sitting, noting what each includes, omits, and stresses. The exercise takes half an hour and permanently changes how a reader trusts these books, since contrived stories collapse under that comparison while real testimony strengthens. Four Gospels are not a problem the church failed to solve. They are the form God chose for the church's knowledge of his Son, and twenty centuries of readers have found them sufficient and more than sufficient.
