Teach: The big story of the Bible
The Bible is one story, not sixty-six separate ones. Walk the whole arc once, from creation to new creation, and every book you open will have a place to sit.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1 (BSB)
Teaching outline
- 1Open: one book or many?Ask the group to name as many Bible books as they can, in any order. Then ask: is it one book or many? Land the claim of the lesson: one story, six movements.
- 2Walk the arcWalk the six movements on the page, reading Genesis 1:1, Genesis 3:15 and Genesis 12:3 aloud as you go. Keep the pace brisk; the detail comes in later lessons.
- 3End where it beginsRead Revelation 21:1, 4 and 5. Show how the ending answers the beginning: garden to garden city, tears wiped away, all things new.
- 4Close: the one questionSet the habit: every reading from now on, ask which movement you are in. Point learners to the flashcards for this lesson.
Discussion questions
- Which of the six movements do you know best, and which is thinnest for you?
- Why does it matter that the promise of a rescuer comes in the same chapter as the fall?
- Where do you see your own life inside this story?
- Read Revelation 21:4 aloud. Which line lands hardest, and why?
Pushback you will meet
“Isn't the Bible just a pile of separate religious writings?”
It was written by many hands, and it still tells one story, because its books keep pointing at each other: promises made in Genesis are kept in the Gospels, and Revelation answers Genesis. Read it through once and the joins show.
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14 (BSB)
“Where would a new Christian even start reading?”
Begin at the story, not the rules. Genesis 1 to Revelation 21 gives the frame; the rest of this course then summarises every book inside that frame, a few pages at a time.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
