Answer key
- Drawing meaning out of a text. Exegesis asks what the author said, to his first hearers, in the words around the verse. (2 Timothy 2:15)
- The exiles from Judah in Babylon. Jeremiah 29 is a letter to the exiles. Verse 10 gives them a seventy-year timetable before restoration. (Jeremiah 29:10)
- Seek the prosperity of the city. God tells the exiles to seek the good of the very city that held them, and to pray for it. Trust looks like faithfulness in place. (Jeremiah 29:7)
- Enduring every circumstance with contentment. Verses 11 and 12 define the "all things": being filled and being hungry, having plenty and having need, with Christ's strength for both. (Philippians 4:12)
- He accurately handles the word of truth. Paul's standard is careful handling. The workman who reads rightly has nothing to be ashamed of. (2 Timothy 2:15)
- Instruction and training in righteousness. Scripture is God-breathed and useful. That is why handling it accurately matters so much. (2 Timothy 3:16)
