גֹּאֵל

goel (from ga'al)

Say it: goh-EL (approximate)H1350In theological review

The kinsman-redeemer who buys back and defends his own.

Why this word is here. Isaiah calls God 'your Redeemer' more than a dozen times and Job stakes his hope on it; Ruth's story is built on the institution.

What it means

The verb ga'al means to redeem, to act as kinsman-redeemer, to avenge, to ransom, to do the part of a kinsman. The goel is the near relative who has the duty and right to buy back family land sold in poverty (Leviticus 25), to free a relative sold into slavery, to marry a brother's widow (the book of Ruth), and to pursue justice for a murdered relative.

When the Old Testament calls God Israel's goel, it is saying he treats Israel as family and personally takes up the family's obligations: buying back, defending, restoring.

Where you meet it

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 19:14 (BSB)

Anchor verse The psalm ends in prayer: 'O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer (goel).' God as the kinsman who stands behind his own.

Do not fear, O Jacob, you worm, O few men of Israel. I will help you,” declares the LORD. “Your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 41:14 (BSB)

'Do not fear, O Jacob... I will help you, declares the LORD. Your Redeemer (goel) is the Holy One of Israel.' In Isaiah, Redeemer becomes one of God's standing titles.

Why it matters

Goel makes redemption personal and legal at once: the redeemer is not a stranger paying a fee but family, obliged by love and standing. Job's cry 'I know that my Redeemer lives' (Job 19:25) and the whole book of Ruth stand on this institution, and it shapes how the New Testament's redemption language feels to its first hearers.

Watch out

Handle the book of Ruth honestly: Boaz is Ruth's goel, but the word there is about land, lineage and a widow's future, and sermons that turn it into a simple romance allegory flatten the law that makes the story work. The other over-claim is that every 'Redeemer' text is a coded prediction of the cross's mechanics. The New Testament does present Jesus as redeemer; the Old Testament word itself means the kinsman who buys back and defends, and it is rich enough without codes.
