Has the Bible been changed over the centuries?

Scripture & How We Got ItIn theological review

The short answer

The text has been copied by hand for centuries, and copyists' slips exist and are openly catalogued. But the message has not been rewritten. We hold manuscripts far older than the printed texts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, and they show a text transmitted with remarkable care. Isaiah's promise stands: the word of our God stands forever.

The fuller answer

Start with the honest part. Before printing, every copy was handwritten, and hand copying produces errors: skipped lines, repeated words, spelling variants. New Testament manuscripts differ from one another in many small places. Pretending otherwise would fail the first real question a sceptic asks.

Then look at the scale of the evidence. Because so many manuscripts survive, from papyrus fragments within living memory of the apostles to complete Bibles like the great fourth century codices, the variants can be compared and the original wording recovered with a very high degree of confidence. The variants that remain disputed are catalogued in the standard handbooks, and in the judgement recorded there they do not carry the weight of any article of the faith. The Old Testament side is even more striking: the Great Isaiah Scroll from Qumran, dated about 125 BCE and now presented by the Israel Museum, contains all sixty six chapters of Isaiah and matches the medieval text that sits roughly a thousand years later in the small details and in the whole.

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

Isaiah 40:8 (BSB)

The page on this site called Can we trust the text works through the manuscripts, the variants, and the early translations one by one. The verdict of the evidence is not that the Bible dropped from heaven printed and bound. It is that a recognisable, checkable chain of copies carries the same Scriptures, and the church has never been asked to trust a text it could not examine.
