Was Jesus a real person?

Bible People & HistoryIn theological review

The short answer

Yes. Whatever a person concludes about his claims, the historical existence of Jesus of Nazareth is confirmed by sources outside the Bible, including one that hated his followers. The Roman historian Tacitus records that Christus suffered the death penalty under Pontius Pilate in the reign of Tiberius, and the Jewish historian Josephus wrote about him within the same century. The debate worth having is not whether he lived, but who he was.

The fuller answer

Start with the witness nobody can accuse of sympathy. Tacitus, the Roman historian, despised Christians and called their faith a mischievous superstition. Writing about Nero's persecution after the fire of Rome, he states the origin of the movement as plain fact: Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus. A hostile Roman source confirms the man, the execution, the official, and the era.

The Jewish historian Josephus, writing in the same century, devotes a paragraph to Jesus in his Antiquities: a wise man and teacher who drew many Jews and Gentiles, condemned by Pilate to the cross at the urging of the leading men, whose followers, the tribe of Christians, were not extinct in Josephus's own day. The passage survives only in manuscripts copied by Christians, and parts of it, including its most confessional phrases, were very likely retouched by later copyists. That caveat is on the record here because the evidence matters more than the convenience. Even read cautiously, it is an independent Jewish notice of Jesus within living memory of the cross.

Against that, put the New Testament itself: four Gospels naming officials, places, and public events that hearers could check, letters of Paul from within a generation preaching his death and resurrection as settled fact, and a movement that exploded from the one city where Jesus was publicly executed. The claim this page defends is modest beside the creeds: Jesus of Nazareth existed, taught, and was crucified under Pontius Pilate. On that, the sources Christian and hostile agree, and the lesson on his resurrection takes the story from there.
