What is the church?
The short answer
The church is the people of God, not a building, a brand, or an audience. Jesus called it my church, promised to build it himself, and the first picture of it is a community devoted to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. If you belong to Christ, you already belong to his church. The local congregation is where that belonging takes flesh.
The fuller answer
Jesus uses the word for his own assembly, and he ties it to himself, not to a building. I will build my church, he tells Peter, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. The church is his before it is ours: he builds it, and death itself is promised not to outlast it.
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:18 (BSB)
In practice it looked like people: converts in Jerusalem sharing teaching, fellowship, bread, and prayer, and then the same pattern planted from town to town. The Apostles' Creed confesses belief in the holy catholic Church, catholic here meaning the whole church across every place and age, not one denomination, together with the communion of saints. A local congregation is the church made visible in one place; the church universal is every believer who belongs to Christ, in heaven and on earth.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:42 (BSB)
So the church is not a religious service provider, a building with a steeple, or a club for the like minded. It is a people, called out of the world by the gospel, built on Christ, taught by his word, marked by baptism and his table, and sent back into the world that crucified its Lord. Where those things are happening, however unimpressive the room, the church is there.
