Why should I go to church?

The Church & Christian LifeIn theological review

The short answer

Because the Christian faith was never designed to be lived alone, and the Bible says so in terms of habit and health, not preference. The first believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer, together. Hebrews warns against neglecting to meet, not because God needs attendance figures, but because encouragement needs a room, a table, and other people.

The fuller answer

Hebrews speaks about gathering the way a doctor speaks about medicine, not the way a salesman speaks about a product. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. The habit being warned against is drift: slow, respectable, unnoticed drift, which gathering exists to interrupt.

Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:25 (BSB)

Look at what the first church actually did together: they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Teaching you could get from a recording. Devotion, fellowship, the shared table, and praying for named people in the room, you cannot. Christianity in the New Testament is irreducibly a we faith: the commands to love, bear with, forgive, confess to, and encourage one another need other people physically present to obey.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

Acts 2:42 (BSB)

None of this canonises every local church or excuses the bad experiences many people carry. Churches fail, and some gatherings are unhealthy enough that leaving them is wisdom. But the New Testament's answer to a bad church is a true one, not none. If you are a Christian without a church, the kindest reading of these verses is that something essential is missing, and it is worth the awkward work of finding your people.
