Why is Jesus the only way?
The short answer
Jesus is the only way because he claimed to be, and because of who he is: the one mediator between God and men, who gave himself as a ransom for all. Peter preached that salvation is found in no one else and that no other name is given by which we must be saved. The claim rests on Jesus' death and resurrection, not on Christian superiority.
The fuller answer
Christians say Jesus is the only way because Jesus said it about himself, and because of who he is and what he did. The claim is not that Christians are better people or that one culture's religion won. It is that salvation deals with sin and death, and only Jesus, being truly God and truly man, died for sins and rose again. Other teachers can point toward truths about God and morality. The New Testament's claim is narrower and stronger: the rescue God promised is found in one person, and God has not appointed a second rescuer alongside him.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 14:6 (BSB)
Speaking to his disciples the night before the cross, Jesus calls himself the way, the truth, and the life, and says no one comes to the Father except through him. The exclusiveness sits inside a comfort: he was preparing a place for them, and he himself is how they get there. Notice he does not call himself one signpost among many on a road that leads elsewhere. He is the way because coming to the Father means coming through the Son who makes the Father known and who gives his life to bring people to him.
Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12 (BSB)
Peter, standing before the same council that condemned Jesus, says salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. That is apostolic preaching, not later church arrogance, and Peter says it at personal risk. The logic is the resurrection: God raised this Jesus, publicly vindicating him as the appointed Saviour. If God has acted decisively in one man to save the world, then pointing people anywhere else for salvation is not humility. It is withholding the rescue God actually sent.
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
1 Timothy 2:5 (BSB)
Paul gives the underlying reason: there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. A mediator must stand with both parties, and only Jesus is both fully God and fully man, and only he paid a ransom. Jesus also pictured himself as the door of the sheepfold, through whom people enter and find pasture. None of this licenses unkindness toward neighbours of other faiths. It does explain why Christians, however gently, keep inviting everyone to this one Saviour.
