חֶסֶדhesed
Covenant kindness and loyalty that keeps its promises.
Why this word is here. One of the Old Testament's most repeated words for God's character, and one English word never covers it; translations cycle through mercy, kindness, steadfast love and loving devotion.
What it means
The full BDB entry describes hesed first as what God does: kindness and lovingkindness shown in condescending to the needs of his creatures, and, specially, covenant-keeping, as in Deuteronomy 7:9 and 7:12. BDB groups it with emet, 'faithfulness and truth', because the pair name God's pledged reliability. Hesed is also what human beings owe each other inside relationships of loyalty, and, rarely, what people show toward God: 'the devotion of your youth' (Jeremiah 2:2) and 'your love (hesed) is like a morning cloud' (Hosea 6:4).
A second, rare homonym spelled the same way means shame or reproach (Leviticus 20:17; Proverbs 14:34). Context, not the spelling, tells them apart. English versions scatter: mercy, kindness, goodness, unfailing love, steadfast love, loving devotion. The BSB usually prints 'loving devotion'.
Where you meet it
Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out: “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness,
Exodus 34:6 (BSB)
Anchor verse God proclaims his own name to Moses: 'compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion (hesed) and faithfulness (emet)'. This is the Old Testament's own summary of God's character.
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Deuteronomy 7:9 (BSB)
God is 'the faithful God, keeping His covenant of loving devotion (hesed) for a thousand generations of those who love Him'. Hesed is covenant-keeping, stated outright.
Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. His loving devotion endures forever.
Psalm 136:1 (BSB)
The refrain of the whole psalm, repeated 26 times: 'His loving devotion (hesed) endures forever.'
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail.
Lamentations 3:22 (BSB)
From inside ruined Jerusalem: 'Because of the LORD's loving devotion (hesed) we are not consumed.' Hesed is what survives when everything else has failed.
Why it matters
Hesed is the thread that ties the covenants together: God's pledged kindness did not depend on Israel deserving it, and Exodus 34:6 is quoted or echoed through the rest of the Old Testament whenever God's character is in question. If you know this word, you can follow arguments in the Psalms and prophets that English translations leave half-hidden.
Watch out
Do not let any single English phrase be preached as the 'real' meaning. 'Steadfast love' is a good rendering, not a definition, and hesed is not a technical term that always means covenant loyalty either: BDB shows it used between people with no covenant in view (as in Genesis 40, Joseph asking the cupbearer to show him hesed). The word names kindness that is loyal, generous and pledged by character, and each occurrence has to be read in its own sentence.
