תּוֹרָה

torah

Say it: TOH-rah (approximate)H8451In theological review

God's instruction and direction for his people.

Why this word is here. Usually translated 'law', which shrinks it; the Psalms treat torah as a delight, and the whole first five books carry its name.

What it means

The lexicon range is: law, direction, instruction. Torah is instruction or direction, human or divine; a body of prophetic teaching; priestly direction; a body of legal directives; particular laws (the torah of the burnt offering); custom; and, with the article, the Mosaic law, the Deuteronomic or Mosaic code.

'Law' is not wrong, but it is narrower than the word. Torah names teaching that directs a life, given by a God who instructs his people the way a father instructs a household.

Where you meet it

This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do.

Joshua 1:8 (BSB)

'This Book of the Law (torah) must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night.' Torah as a book to live inside.

But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:2 (BSB)

Anchor verse The blessed person's 'delight is in the Law (torah) of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night'. Delight, not mere duty.

The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple.

Psalm 19:7 (BSB)

'The Law (torah) of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.' The same psalm that praises creation praises instruction.

Oh, how I love Your law! All day long it is my meditation.

Psalm 119:97 (BSB)

'Oh, how I love Your law (torah)!' Psalm 119 uses torah and its synonyms for 176 verses of sustained affection.

Why it matters

If torah means only legislation, the Psalms sound strange and Paul's arguments get misread as God changing his mind about rules. Seeing torah as the Father's instruction makes sense of both the delight of Psalm 119 and the New Testament's claim that the instruction always pointed forward.

Watch out

Avoid two opposite over-claims. 'Torah really means teaching, not law, so it has nothing to do with commands' goes too far: the lexicon's range includes legal directives and codes. And 'torah equals the 613 commandments' is a later rabbinic count, not the word's meaning. The word is instruction from God, which in the Pentateuch includes story, worship, mercy and commands together.
