Did Jesus claim to be God?

JesusIn theological review

The short answer

Yes, though usually in the language of his own Scriptures rather than in a slogan. He took God's own name, I AM, onto his lips, claimed oneness with the Father, forgave sins, and accepted worship. His hearers understood the claims clearly enough: the charge they brought against him, again and again, was blasphemy.

The fuller answer

The clearest moment comes in an argument about Abraham. Jesus says that Abraham rejoiced to see his day, and when his opponents object that Jesus is not yet fifty years old, he answers: Truly, truly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am! I AM was the name God announced to Moses at the burning bush. The crowd's response tells you how they heard it: they picked up stones. Nobody stones a man for a grammar mistake.

“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 8:58 (BSB)

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:14 (BSB)

The pattern holds elsewhere. I and the Father are one, he says, and again stones come out, and the reason is stated out loud: because you, a mere man, claim to be God. He tells a paralysed man his sins are forgiven, something God alone can do, and then heals him to prove the authority is real. After the resurrection he accepts Thomas's confession, My Lord and my God, without rebuke.

I and the Father are one.

John 10:30 (BSB)

It is sometimes said Jesus never claimed to be God and that the church invented the idea later. The Gospels do not support that. The claims are there, woven through his teaching, his titles, and his actions, and the earliest creeds simply kept saying what the first witnesses had heard. The Council of Chalcedon confessed him as truly God and truly man because the church judged that anything less contradicted Jesus's own words about himself.
