What about people who have never heard the gospel?

Salvation & the GospelIn theological review

The short answer

The Bible teaches that God has revealed himself to everyone in creation and conscience, so no one is wholly without light, while also teaching that salvation is found in Jesus Christ. It does not give a detailed account of God's dealings with every unevangelised person. Christians therefore hold his justice and his mercy together, and keep preaching Christ to all.

The fuller answer

This question deserves an honest answer rather than a tidy one. Scripture makes two claims that must be held together. First, no human being lives in total darkness about God. Second, Jesus is the Saviour, and the gospel is God's appointed message of rescue. Pulling either claim away from the other produces errors: despair about God's fairness on one side, or carelessness about Christ and mission on the other. The texts themselves draw the lines, and they leave some things with God.

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.

Romans 1:20 (BSB)

Paul calls the first kind of knowledge general revelation. God's eternal power and divine nature are seen in what he has made, and his law is known in the conscience, which accuses or excuses a person's own conduct. In Romans chapter 2, Paul says those without the written law will be judged by a just standard, not by information they never had. General revelation is real light. Paul's sober verdict, though, is that people suppress it and turn to idols, so it exposes need more than it rescues.

All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

Romans 2:12 (BSB)

Special revelation is God's further speaking: his words through the prophets, and finally his Son, with the gospel of Christ crucified and risen. In Acts chapter 17 Paul tells Athens that God now commands all people everywhere to repent, having fixed a day of judgement and given assurance by raising Jesus. John records Jesus saying that he is the way, the truth and the life. Christians may not soften that claim, and it is why they cross oceans with the message.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 14:6 (BSB)

What Scripture does not do is publish God's casebook for individuals who die without hearing. It reveals a Judge who will do right, a Saviour who died for the world, and a God who takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. Christians differ over how far to go beyond that. The safe ground is this: no one is saved by ignorance, salvation is in Christ alone, God judges with perfect knowledge and fairness, and our task is to make Christ known.
